Now that we have used NTBackup to create a backup set for specific data, lets use the data set to perform a restore.

You can start by either locating the backup file on your server using Windows Explorer and double-clicking it, or opening the NTBackup software by clicking on Start and then Run, typing in 'ntbackup' at the prompt, and pressing OK.

Once opened, allow the program to start in Wizard mode, and click Next.

On the next page, select the Restore files and settings option, and click Next.

Now, you will be able to see the directory structure of the backup file. Expand the structure by click the plus signs next to the folders, until you have navigated to the specific files or folders you would like to restore.

For now, let's restore the entire 'wwwroot' directory. Place a check mark in the box next to 'wwwroot', and click Next.

Next, you will be given an option of either beginning the restore immediately with the default options, in this case set to restore the files to their original location and create duplicate copies of the existing files, or you can click Advanced for more options. Let's restore the files to an alternate location by clicking Advanced.

Click the drop-down menu named 'Restore files to', and select 'Alternate Location'.

Now, you will have the option of either restoring the files to an existing folder or creating a new one. Let's create a new folder named 'wwwroot_restore'. This way, the restore will in no way interfere with existing files. Once your desired option is selected, click Next.

Though we are not restoring the files to their original location, the program will still ask if you want to Leave the existing files intact, replace them if they out-date the files being restored, or to replace them regardless. Let's choose to leave any existing files intact, and click Next.

The next page will provide security options for the restore, such as also restoring permissions. You can leave these settings as default and click Next.

With all of the restore options now set, we can begin the restore by clicking 'Finish'.

The size of the data, coupled with the amount of files being restored, will effect the duration of the restore process. As we were not restoring a great amount of data, this restore finished within seconds. Once the restore completes, you will see a status window confirming the successful restore and are given the option to review the restore logs by clicking the 'Report...' button. For now, let's close the confirmation window.

You can now view the restored files in the specified folder, and are free to copy them to any location on your server.
